name: relicstar.
gender: female.
age: thirty-nine moons.
position: leader.
clan: shadowclan.
personality: relicstar isn't your run-of-the-mill cat. her methods are unorthodox, and she doesn't like to play by the rules, not even her own. how she ever came to be the leader... an interesting conundrum, and one she can't even figure out. she's never liked following the rules, and breaks them practically every chance she gets.
as a leader, she's often cold and indifferent, to hide what she's really thinking. she won't let anyone under her skin, won't get close to anyone, and at her best is mechanical-- just going through the motions for ceremonies and gatherings, one of those sickly sweet fake smiles plastered onto her face. she doesn't trust anyone as far as she could throw them, and barely speaks a word outside of those required by her.
as a friend-- which is very rare indeed-- relicstar mellows out a bit, inches slowly closer to her true self, but still doesn't reveal anything. at least she doesn't have to fake the small smiles she offers those who are close to her. no details of her personal life are ever shared, no matter what, and after talking for a while she feels even more empty inside, and just walks away. normally she leaves a speechless cat behind, having just been rude, sarcastic, and a lot more besides.
as an enemy, relicstar is ruthless. her true strength isn't in her leadership skills, but when claws are out and fur is flying. nothing can compare to the happy gleam in her eyes when she's fighting, when her teeth are so deeply into her opponent's throat that they have no chance whatsoever of surviving. fighting in a battle is her personal high-- nothing could make her feel better.
finally, when she's herself, relicstar is so different that you couldn't guess her true self in your wildest dreams. this part of her only comes out when she's alone-- and for good reason too. she does her best to keep her psychotic mind away from her clanmates, not wanting to hurt any of them. when she lets herself go, breaks down and lets her other personality out.
if anyone encountered her in that state, she would kill them with no hesitation. it would be no exaggeration to call that the complete overhaul of her so carefully layered facade.
appearance: to call relicstar a plain old flame pointed cat would be a mistake indeed. she stands tall and proud, even at her most haggard, and though she doesn't bother with keeping her fur properly groomed half the time. most of the time her light cream fur-- with deep orange point and stripes that are very clearly defined-- is tainted with a layer of dust.
she doesn't see what the point of grooming herself regularly is, if what matters most is her leadership skills. so she simply doesn't. when she starts looking like a scraggly rogue, fur unkempt and looking more brown than flame point, only then does she groom herself. quite a shame, really; of course, when one sees her eyes, one tends not to pay much attention to her fur any longer.
her eyes are probably her best feature, other than her sharp tongue. they're a light shade of electric blue, deep as an ocean and piercing. you can get lost in those eyes, and the depth of emotion in them; of course, the touch of insanity hidden deep within does rather foil the poignant effect.
history: think of a bright, warm day in the middle of greenleaf. a young queen, barely fourteen moons old, is grooming herself in a nest in the nursery. her belly is swollen almost to the bursting point, and she looks tired and depressed. this is rosefeather, and she is about to give birth. almost an entire day later, three young kittens lay by her side: burntkit, a tom and the oldest kit, relickit, the only she-kit, and frozenkit, the youngest male and the runt.
rosefeather raises these three young ones all by herself. hard not to, as their father-- their surrogate, to be more exact-- wants little to do with the kits fathered by his love's first mate. his name was crash; he was a loner who happened upon her one night and decided to have a little fun. when rosefeather discovered her pregnancy, she asked her true love to cover for her, so that no one would suspect that her kits were only halfclan.
they grew up well- as well as one can grow up with an absent father and an overburdened mother, anyways. act like normal kits- run, romp, play with each other, nag warriors, everything like that. they aren't affected by their surroundings very much. but that all changed when they became apprentices.
relicpaw was given a mentor named flamingbreath, a fairly new warrior himself, and they began training. just like normal, right? wrong. she was up at daybreak and collapsed into her nest well after sunset. he worked her until she could barely move, and then some more. she suffered terrible abuse at his paws. when she was half a moon away from her warrior ceremony, a tree branch fell on him and crushed him in a freak accident. relicpaw didn't mourn his death.
she was a fairly nondescript warrior, training two apprentices before the day when bonestar announced her as deputy. she was deputy for thirteen moons until bonestar's lives were all gone. during that time, relicflare, as she was then known, fell in love with him. she didn't bear his kits, but they were very much in love.
she has only been leader for a few days.
rp sample: the night was dark, the moon was waning, and a lone cat slunk by on her way to the moonpool. she had never felt more alone in her entire life as she trekked up the path, pawsteps weary and mind dulling from lack of sleep. no clouds hung suspended in the sky, something she was grateful for; maybe... starclan would approve of her even after all the things she'd done? after where she came from? the thought filled her mind with tumultuous joy and a hesitant surprise.
suddenly her pawsteps didn't seem so heavy anymore.
it wasn't much longer until she got there; she was starting to enjoy the solitude, the lingering scent of pine from shadowclan's forests hanging in a cloud around the flame pointed cat. when she finally stepped up to the pool, her breath caught in her throat; what seemed like millions of stars shone down, reflected in the crystal clear water. the sight was so beautiful that she couldn't even move; she was frozen in place.
she shook her head, snorting; she was there for one reason and one reason only: for her lives.
so the former deputy of shadowclan took the last step that was needed to reach the glittering water, crouched down, and lapped at the water. within moments she awoke in a very different place: she was in starclan at long last, a place she hadn't thought to see until her last breath left her body. she gazed around the starry landscape with awe, and a strange sense of familiarity. her eyes widened as the first cat stepped forward; it was a face she knew too well.
"mother." relicflare murmured. "it's been... so long." she squeezed her eyes shut, whispered voice full of a pain she'd never felt before. her mother had died such a long time ago that her memory had almost faded from her only daughter's mind, something it ashamed her indeed to admit.
"relicflare, i could not have been more proud of the way you have lived your life so far." rosefeather murmured. she padded up to her daughter. "and now i am proud to give you your first life. a life of hope, of joy, of knowledge of the peace that will be your reign." she touched her nose to her daughter's, and watched as a spasm of pain shook her. relicflare was rooted to the spot, eyes unfocused, unable to move as images of a healthy, happy shadowclan flashed before her eyes.
her mother began to pad away, and she ached to call out to her, tell her she needed rosefeather to stay. but she couldn't, and the next cat was upon her before she could think. "relicflare... i watched over you while you were deputy." he muttered. "i never thought you would make it this far... i think that, now, i owe you one." he flashed her a cheeky grin. "i give you a life of laughter during strife. know that even in the toughest times you'll always stand above others, for you will still have that spark inside you that lights the way."
the life felt like a hurricane had slammed into her full force. now she saw blood, so much blood she was drowning in it, drowning, never going to get out... she opened her maw to give a voiceless cry, shaking her head violently. she wasn't getting new lives... she was dying, dying, and he was just standing there watching, doing nothing... and then the pain was over, and she gasped, staring right at him. "my name is solarflame, and i was your mother's brother." she merely nodded as he padded away.
"...salinestone." relicflare murmured, eyes filled with sadness. he had died the night she had become deputy, his life extinguished by she herself, in a fit of that psychotic madness she kept locked inside her.
"relicflare." he replied, dipping his head. "i give you a life of eternal regret and sorrow, so that you know the difference between right and wrong, and use your judgment in every matter-- whether it's part of being a leader or not." he padded away while she was still in receiving the life, in the throes of pain and strife. she sent him a small smile, though he didn't see it.
a young apprentice slunk up next, looking battered and unkempt. even death hadn't changed his habits. "i give you a life of wisdom and integrity. can't have one without some of the other, y'know? and they're both important." gingerpaw spoke gruffly. she had only time to smile before the pain hit her once more. it wasn't as bad, and she endured it with just the slightest bit of shaking. gingerpaw licked her cheek before he padded away, leaving her with love in her eyes.
four down... how could i endure five more? she wondered as shiningnight approached. shiningnight had been the medicine cat when she was born; an elderly, gnarled old cat with a bad limp, she'd died before relicflare really got to know her. "dear one, you need endurance, and so that is what i give you with my life." she rasped out faintly. this time she barely felt the pain; it was closer to a twinge, just present in the back of her mind. so it wasn't as bad as she had thought any longer, and boy was she grateful for that.
as the next cat stepped up, relicflare's eyes filled with anger. "flamingbreath." she muttered. she hadn't seen him since she was eight moons old, when he'd been her mentor... and not a good one either. pushing her past the limits of any normal cat, forbidding questions, and pounding on her until she had no choice but to go to the medicine cat at the end of every session. of course she never told anyone, and besides... who would have listened to an apprentice? no one, that's who.
"little brat... well, guess you ain't so little any more. i give you a life of vengeance and anger, so that you will never let criminals go unpunished. let it rule you in times of war, and then you'll see how good i really am to you." he spoke gruffly, rolling his eyes. you mean how little, you abusive tom. i can't believe his audacity. relicflare thought, narrowing her eyes. this time the pain was worse than ever before, ripping through her with the force of starclan's entirety. flamingbreath looked upon her pain with a snarky grin before padding away.
a complete stranger approached her next. she spoke not a word, just touched her nose to relicflare's and stayed like that for the longest time. "you have the life i could have had, had bonestar not ripped my life from me. but i know the feelings of your heart, and i do not hold a grudge. i give you a life of love, for those who have already passed and for those who are yet to come." she didn't know how badly love could hurt until that moment. a whole slew of images passed through her mind ten-- no, one hundred-- times more vivid than the others. bonestar at the moonpool, bonestar appointing her deputy, her leader once again-- standing over a body... his final death, and her shock and pain at the announcement.
the images refused to leave her mind, but one stood out above all others: the dead cat lying at his feet, who looked exactly like the one standing before her right at that moment. "please... your name..." relicflare rasped, wrenching her eyes open to give her an imploring stare. the cat nodded, smiling softly. "relicheart." her eyes bugged out of her head... just when had she been killed? she'd thought the name relic was unique to herself alone. oh well, not a matter she needed to be concerned with.
her attention drifted to the side, where she thought she'd just seen the love of her life. but no... she couldn't have. bonestar wasn't there, he wouldn't be watching. but then her lives reclaimed her attention, as another cat had approached. once again, he was unfamiliar. relicflare nodded as he stopped; she didn't think she could take anymore... she thought she would overflow. but she stood, stock still, as her eighth life was presented.
"i give you a life of courage. starclan knows this is what a leader truly needs, to never give up no matter the circumstances. know when to back off... but never give up." the tom, whose name was fatedmind, spoke. "i was to be deputy of windclan before i died... and i died only because i lacked the courage to go on after my love died." this life, contrary to the others, felt like a warm rush of air; it filled her, made her stronger, and relived her pain. "use your gifts well." he disappeared as the words echoed around her.
and then, he did approach. bonestar. she was unable to move-- not from pain now, but sheer shock-- at the sight of him. her leader, her friend, her confidante... her lover. "b-bonestar..." she whispered, voice full of bottled up emotion.
"relicflare. i have to say, you will be a great leader... maybe the greatest of us all. my gift-- my life to you-- is that you stay true to yourself. listen to your soul, and never push away that sense of your own being." he touched is nose to hers, and she received her final life, letting out a small, almost inaudible, whimper of pain. "i now hail you with your new name... relicstar."
the voices of starclan murmured their ascent, chanting her name. they got louder and louder until she thought she might lose herself in the voices, and bonestar's deep copper eyes.
and then her eyes snapped open, her visit to starclan ended. relicstar stood, stretched, and began the long walk back to camp, feeling bonestar's spirit right beside her the entire time.
other: first attempt at a leader. and i like doing samples, just to get to know the character. ;3
